Mayor's Message:

WE HEAR WHAT WE LISTEN FOR

T
wo men were walking in a downtown area.  Suddenly, one stopped and said, "Listen.  Do you hear that cricket?"  Hearing nothing but traffic and people, the other man asked, "How can you possibly hear a cricket above all this noise?"

Well, the first man happened to be an entomologist, who had trained himself to listen to the sounds of nature, but instead of trying to explain to his friend, he simply took a coin out of his pocket and dropped it on the sidewalk.  Instantly, a dozen people stopped and began to look around.  He turned to his friend and said, "We hear what we listen for."

As neighbors, friends, moms, dads, what do we listen for?  Have we trained ourselves to really listen to people?

Listening is hard work, but it is the easiest way to let someone know you sincerely care.  To really listen, you must want to hear the message.

Good listening means not only hearing what people say, but also understanding what they imply.  It takes more than merely waiting for someone to finish speaking.  The person who listens with understanding is also the one who eventually is the most listened-to.

Like the man who heard the cricket, let's "tune in" to our friends, neighbors, family.  We might be amazed at what we'll learn.

Sincerely,

Brad Andersen, Mayor
